Job Responsibilities

The Kent County Health Department invites applications for the position of Public Health Educator I – Substance Use Prevention Education. 

This is a professional level position in the field of public health education with responsibility for planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of health education programs and strategies related to the prevention of youth substance use and abuse. Further program responsibilities include health awareness, group behavior change, and risk reduction services directed toward diverse individuals and groups. Duties will be performed in collaboration with an internal substance use prevention team in the Health Education and Promotion Section of the Community Health Strategy Division.

This is a non-supervisory position.

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires:

  • A bachelor’s degree in public health education, community health education, health science, or other related area
  • Direct or related experience in substance use prevention efforts
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted Michigan driver's license and have access to transportation in the performance of job duties. 
  • A thorough working knowledge of principles and practices of public health education 
C.H.E.S or C.P.S. certification strongly desired at time of hire, otherwise chosen candidate must be willing to obtain and maintain certification at employee's expense.

The ability to assess community needs, set goals and objectives, coordinate programming with community partners, and effectively administer evidence-based prevention programs in schools for students, grades 3 through 12, is essential.  Skills in health communications and community engagement and outreach are preferred.
