Duties & Responsibilities

The Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Johannesburg, wishes to appoint an Associate Professor/Professor qualified and registered by the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Biokineticist, who will contribute actively towards teaching and learning, research and community engagement in-line with the vision, mission, and goals of the University of Johannesburg.  
 
The successful candidate is expected to undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research supervision respectively, contribute to the development and review of undergraduate teaching and curricula, and, where necessary, become involved in community engagement activities, in line with the Department and Faculty specific objectives.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Teach, supervise and assess students, prepare study material in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the Department of Sport and Movement Studies.
  • Be available for contact sessions with students.
  • Research in Biokinetics/Sport Science.
  • Improve and increase personal knowledge of Biokinetics and related fields through research and publications.
  • Contribute 1.5 (AP) /2 (P) research output units per year.
  • Share in the administration and management of the Department and Faculty.
  • Invigilate during University examinations and assessments.
  • Participate in official gatherings of the University ad committees to which the incumbent has been nominated.
  • Participate in official meetings of the Department and Faculty.  
  • Participate in University-linked community development projects.  
  • Do anything reasonably requested by the Head of Department and Executive Dean.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Minimum requirements for Professor:
  • Doctoral Degree (NQF 10) in the relevant discipline.
  • Must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Biokineticist. Proof of current registration will be required.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years’ teaching experience in Biokinetics and/or Sport Science in academic tertiary institution.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ working experience in the Biokinetics discipline.
  • Experience in clinical accompaniment of undergraduate and postgraduate Biokinetics students.
  • Has successfully supervised Master’s and Doctoral students within the minimum time.
  • Exceptional track record of accredited research publications.
  • NRF-rated or will apply for NRF rating.
  • Evidence of successful external funding.
  • Mentorship of Post Doctoral candidate(s) would be desirable.

  • Experience in clinical accompaniment of undergraduate and postgraduate Biokinetics students.
  • Good track record of supervised / co-supervision of Master’s and/or Doctoral students.
  • Good track record of accredited research publications.
 
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:
 
  • Excellent command of the field of Human Movement Studies, Biokinetics, and cognate fields, and the latest education and clinical practice trends.
  • Application of current trends in assessment and evaluation strategies.
  • Good organisational and administration skills.
  • Ability to function independently as well as in a team.
  • Effective communication and relationship management skills.
  • Good time management skills and the ability to perform under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in English (verbal and written).
  • Ability to self-manage own research group.
  • Computer literacy and the application thereof in contact and mobile learning environments.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Show adaptability in the teaching and learning environment in becoming an active team-player and to address possible challenges in the environment in a proactive manner.
