The Role
Mental Health Clinical Specialist / Supervisor (Occupational Therapist)
This dynamic role involves a blend of the development and delivery of professional development initiatives, quality improvement, client case work and employee supervision within the Mental Health Stream.
The role is responsible for leading the development and delivery of professional development initiatives, mentoring clinicians and contributing to a culture of continuous learning and clinical excellence across the service stream. In addition, the Clinical Specialist will design and implement quality improvement projects aimed at enhancing service effectiveness, efficiency, and client satisfaction, thereby driving innovation and ensuring best practice in the delivery of occupational therapy services.
This role will also work closely with the Early Career and Student Program Lead to assist in the education and induction program for early career employees.
Duties Include:
Clinical Expertise and Consultation:
• Provide advanced clinical support to BePositive occupational therapists, particularly in cases where a supervisor is unable to provide specialised guidance.
• Act as the primary point of contact for complex clinical enquiries within Mental Health OT
• Maintain a high level of contemporary knowledge and clinical expertise in the specialist area to support best-practice service delivery
• Proactively engage in ongoing professional learning, including attending relevant conferences, workshops, and training in the area of specialisation.
• Share knowledge and learnings with the broader clinical team to support a learning culture.
Leadership in Clinical Education:
• Design, develop, and deliver education sessions, workshops, and learning resources for occupational therapists in line with the needs of the clinical stream.
• Mentor and coach clinicians to build capability and confidence in delivering services within the specialist area.
• Support hands on learning through shadow visits and co-visits where appropriate.
• Support a culture of personal accountability, safe practice, and continuous learning within the clinical team.
Quality Improvement, Service Development and Best Practice:
• Lead and evaluate the implementation of quality improvement initiatives in area of speciality aimed at enhancing service quality, client outcomes, and efficiency.
• Identify emerging trends, risks, or service gaps and provide recommendations for innovation or strategic development.
• Ensure all clinical practice aligns with professional standards, evidence-based practice, and organisational policies and funding scheme requirements.
• Actively participate in clinical audits, risk management, and policy development relevant to the specialist area.
Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration:
• Work collaboratively with all internal stakeholders to ensure cohesive service delivery.
• Build and maintain relationships with relevant external key stakeholders to support client outcomes and service excellence.
• Represent the organisation in professional forums, networks, and working groups related to the area of specialty.
Clinical Duties:
• Conducting assessments, such as functional capacity review, family support plans, assistive technology, home modification
• Report writing and case noting.
• Attendance at client case conferencing and intervention planning meetings
• Designing and implementing therapy plans to assist clients to reach their goals.
• Receipt of weekly supervision and providing supervision to direct supervisees.
Supervision Duties:
• Supervise, mentor, and support employees within the Mental Health Stream, promoting a positive and collaborative team culture.
• Conduct regular supervision sessions with team members, offering guidance and professional development opportunities.
• Collaborate with the Stream Leader to monitor team performance, address challenges, and implement improvement strategies.
• Deliver training to enhance the skills and knowledge of the Mental Health Stream team.
• Act as a point of escalation for complex or critical cases, providing support and expertise to both clients and team members.
Skills and Experience:
• Tertiary Qualification in Occupational Therapy
• Current AHPRA registration
• Strong evidence of well-developed communication skills
• An ability to work autonomously.
• Demonstrated advanced clinical knowledge and experience in Mental Health Occupational Therapy
• Proven ability to apply evidence-based practice and complex clinical reasoning in service delivery
• Experience providing high-level clinical guidance, consultation and mentorship to peers, particularly in situations where a therapist’s supervisor may not have the required expertise.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver engaging, evidence-informed professional development and training programs tailored to staff learning needs.
• Well-developed time management and organisational skills
• An ability to mentor others and role model quality performance
