MCES Clinical Educator

Job Summary:

To provide critical and emergency level care in transport, in hospital and in times of disaster while also providing education and training consistent with the health system expectations and current medical practice to all MCES transport assets and personnel.

Education & Experience

Education and Experience Required:

Associates Degree in nursing, education, or health Sciences and three (3) years of clinical experience in either emergency room, ICU, or transport environment.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required: 

Valid RN or Mississippi Critical Care Paramedic license, MS driver's license, ACLS, BLS, PALS, NIMS ICS 100 and 700, and either PHTLS or TNCC.

If paramedic, a Certified Flight Paramedic (FP-C) certification or Critical Care Paramedic Certification (CCP-C) is required. If a RN, a Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN) or Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN)

certification is required. NRP required post-hire within 90 days.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the information and techniques to identify, diagnose and treat human injuries or diseases for adult, pediatric and neonatal patients.  Knowledge of agents, equipment, procedures, and techniques for the provision of emergency and critical care for inter-facility and scene transports.  Verbal and written communication skills.  Ability to remain calm in emergency conditions.  Ability to provide physical and psychological treatment and comfort to patients.  Ability to withstand exposure to noise, external weather conditions, and work in high altitudes.  Ability to maintain and comply with weight and lifting restrictions and requirements.  Ability to fill shifts at Jackson UMMC campus or remote site as required. Must have strong computer software skills regarding the creation of educational materials and the presentation of those materials. Additionally, must be able to use computers and associated software to maintain training records and personnel files as well as prepare reports. Comfortable speaking in front of small and large groups as well as performing skills/procedures in front of others as a means of instruction.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates, plans, administers, and documents care for patients during transport, on scene or in the hospital/clinic setting.
  • Provides physical and psychological comfort to patients. Monitors patient condition and adverse reactions to drugs of treatment.
  • Ensures the readiness, cleanliness and conducts or reports the need for maintenance on all equipment involved in patient care/emergency response. Reports equipment failures appropriately.
  • Collaborates with team members, outside agencies/healthcare providers in the care of patients and identifies opportunities for improvement. Performs, presents and prepares for dissemination case reviews and after action reports as needed.
  • Identifies the educational/instructional needs of staff, outside agencies/providers, and other partners through interviews, feedback, educational requirements, professional requirements, program requirements, accreditation requirements, and/or request.
  • Acts as the subject matter expert for education/orientation requirements for the program, hospital, state and accrediting agencies. Prepares and maintains appropriate documentation as required by these organizations/agencies as it relates to education, training, QA, or PI. Develops workflows and processes for the execution and documentation of educational activities as well as outreach.
  • Acts as an educational/training representative on various committees for the program, hospital, and other agencies/organizations.
  • Prepares; reports, teaching and visual aids, instructional materials, and reference materials; recommends purchase of equipment and materials relevant to educational/instructional activities.
  • Performs and/or coordinates educational programs for the program, hospital and outside organizations. Assists in the design and implementation of new hire orientation, on-going competencies, just in time training, as needed training, as well as skills check offs and simulations. Performs documentation of these activities consistent with program, hospital, state and accrediting agency needs. Maintains a system to quickly access educational/training records and run reports that may be needed during an audit.
  • Promotes a positive image of UMMC by participating in community outreach programs.
  • May occasionally be needed to assist with/perform other program/hospital/state/federal functions outside of the educator or transport role. This may result in overnight/extended travel, need to be available on-call, at night, on the weekend or during holidays.
