The Scientific Writer will be responsible for the drafting of external communications to a wide range of constituents and stakeholders, including the development of scientific manuscripts for peer reviewed journal publication, and scientific communications promoting projects and data supporting the efforts of Cure SMA collaborations. 


Cure SMA established the SMA Industry Collaboration and the Real World Evidence Collaboration to leverage the experience, expertise and resources of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies and nonprofit organizations involved in SMA, to guide the future direction of SMA clinical trial development and real world evidence collection. Key goals will be to support members of the Research and Clinical Care Department in the publication and dissemination of research findings and care/treatment guidelines as developed by Cure SMA collaborations. The incumbent may also be involved in the presentation of results through the development of abstracts/posters and creation of lay materials.  


Requirements

  

Essential Function/Responsibility with associated competencies 

  • Responsible for developing and submitting a variety of scientific materials for peer reviewed journals, internal and external print and website communications.
  • Assists with the development of conference booklets, and educational materials for lay audiences.
  • Edits and proofreads articles, abstracts, posters, oral and visual presentations for style and content
  • Prepares figures and illustrations for publications
  • Conducts review of medical literature and summarizes findings
  • Work with the VP, Clinical Research, VP, Data Analytics, and Chief Scientific Officer to identify and maintain a cost effective scientific and public communication plan
  • Project management of tasks/projects related to writing projects as needed.
  • Perform other job duties as required.

 Minimum Education Required 

  • Master's degree in a scientific discipline. Experience may be considered In lieu of a Master's degree;  Minimum of two to four years related scientific/ health care communication experience and must have experience in a working in academic or industrial scientific setting.

  

Minimum Experience/Skills/Competencies Required (e.g., Time Management, Communication):

  • Experience drafting and submitting scientific publications for peer review 
  • Excellent Communicator (written, verbal, presentations)
  • Familiarity with the principles of clinical research
  • Ability to interpret and present clinical data and other complex information
  • Project Management Skills with organizational abilities 
  • Superb attention to detail
  • Working knowledge of MS Office
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams and departments
  • Strong time management skills 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and comfortability dealing with all levels within the organization 
  • Intellectual curiosity 
  • Working Knowledge of biology and scientific research processes required 
  • The position will require maintaining project budgets established by the research and clinical care department leadership. 

  

Physical Requirements of Position:

  • Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require walking, standing for long periods of time, bending, or reaching. 

Work Environment:

  • Position will be remote or at the Cure SMA National Office
  • Attendance at 1 week Annual Conference is required
  • Attendance at various collaboration meetings is required 
  • Work is generally performed within an office environment with standard office equipment available

 

The pay range for this position is $66, 000 to $80,000 annually. The actual base pay offered may vary depending on multiple factors including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal equity.
