RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Biokinetics and/or Sport Science;
  • Planning, presenting and assessing practical and clinical skills training for undergraduate and postgraduate students;
  • Facilitating the development of professional competencies in exercise testing, clinical assessment, exercise prescription and the monitoring of exercise interventions;
  • Contributing to the clinical and practical supervision of students;
  • Teaching students to apply evidence-based exercise interventions for apparently healthy individuals and individuals with chronic disease, disability, injury or other special considerations;
  • Playing an active academic role at national and international levels;
  • Contributing to departmental and broader academic activities and responsibilities;
  • Mentoring and supervising postgraduate students;
  • Conducting collaborative research within their area of specialisation, preferably in high-performance or applied sport science;
  • Participating in community engagement and professional and institutional standards;
  • Ensuring alignment of activities with the directives and minimum standards of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA);
  • Supporting the implementation of the directives and minimum standards of the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master's degree in Biokinetics, Sports Science or a closely related discipline;
  • Minimum of 2 accredited publications in peer-reviewed journals (ideally more, preferably in the last 3 years and in ISI journals)
  • Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Biokineticist.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Sound theoretical and applied knowledge of Biokinetics and/ or Sport Science;
  • The ability to explain and demonstrate clinical and practical procedures to students;
  • Knowledge of appropriate professional, ethical and safety requirements;
  • Demonstrated potential to become an established researcher and academic;
  • Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Some first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals;
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team; and
  • The ability to contribute across the teaching, research, professional service and administrative activities of the Division.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • PhD in Biokinetics, Sport Science or a closely related discipline;
  • At least 1 year teaching, tutoring or clinical supervision experience;
  • Valid driver's licence.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
