RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
- Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Sport Science including Biomechanics;
- Planning and facilitating the development of practical competencies in athlete assessment, physical conditioning, performance testing and athlete monitoring;
- Contributing to sport science activities within the University's research and competitive sport environment;
- Mentoring and supervising postgraduate students;
- Conducting and publishing collaborative research within an appropriate area of specialisation, with preference for work that integrates biomechanics, performance analysis, high-performance sport, or applied sport science;
- Participating in community engagement and professional service initiatives;
- Playing an active academic role at national and international levels;
- Contributing to departmental and broader academic activities and responsibilities;
- Ensuring alignment of academic and practical activities with relevant professional, ethical and institutional standards.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Master's degree in Sports Science, Exercise Science, Biomechanics or a closely related discipline;
- Minimum of 2 accredited publications in peer-reviewed journals (ideally more, preferably in the last 3 years and in ISI journals)
- Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Biokineticist.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Sound theoretical and applied knowledge of Sport Science;
- The ability to integrate theoretical knowledge with laboratory, gymnasium and field-based teaching by selecting, administering and interpreting athlete-performance assessments and translating the findings into evidence-based training and performance activities.
- Demonstrated potential to become an established researcher and academic;
- Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills;
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
- The ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team; and
- The ability to contribute across the teaching, research, performance-support and administrative activities of the Division.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
- PhD in Sport Science, Exercise Science, Biomechanics or a closely related discipline;
- At least 1 year teaching, tutoring or clinical supervision experience;
- Valid driver's licence.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
