Position Title: Health Science Instructor – WVU Med Ed Pathway 

Contract Term: 200 Days 
Location: Martinsburg High Schools and Spring Mills High School 

Reports To: School Principal / Director of Career & Technical Education 

 

Position Overview: 

Berkeley County Schools is seeking a motivated and qualified Health Sciences Instructor to launch and lead a new high-profile Medical Education (Med Ed) pathway, preparing high school students for careers in healthcare. This program, supported by a partnership with WVU Medicine and other local healthcare institutions, offers students real-world learning in clinical and medical office environments. 

 

The ideal candidate is a licensed RN or certified Medical Assistant with recent, hands-on experience in healthcare, and a passion for working with students. Berkeley County Schools is seeking a motivated and qualified Health Sciences Instructor to lead the Medical Education (Med Ed) Pathway, a high-profile program designed to prepare high school students for meaningful careers in healthcare. This innovative initiative—developed in partnership with WVU Medicine, Berkeley Medical Center, and other regional healthcare leaders—provides students with real-world, hands-on learning in clinical and medical office environments. 

 

As a key instructional leader, you will guide students through a rigorous curriculum that integrates classroom instruction, simulated workplace practices, and supervised clinical experiences. You will collaborate closely with healthcare professionals and educational partners to ensure that students graduate with both the skills and the confidence needed to pursue careers or further education in health sciences. 

 

The ideal candidate is a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) or certified Medical Assistant with recent, hands-on experience in healthcare and a deep passion for mentoring young people. Strong communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to student success and workforce development are essential for this role. 

 

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction in health science courses. 
  • Provide foundational training in both clinical procedures and medical office practices, such as: 
  • Patient care 
  • Clinical examinations and treatments 
  • Insurance and billing 
  • Medical terminology and transcription 
  • Supervise student skill development and workplace readiness. 
  • Collaborate with industry partners to align the curriculum with current healthcare standards and opportunities. 
  • Guide students toward industry-recognized certifications, such as Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) or CNA, depending on the course of study. 
  • Ensure all program components meet West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) standards. 

Required Qualifications: 

Applicants must meet one of the following certification paths as outlined by the WVDE for CTE instructors: 

 

Option 1: Registered Nurse (RN Pathway) 

  • Hold a valid RN license in West Virginia. 
  • Possess a minimum of an Associate Degree in Nursing. 
  • Have 4,000 clock hours (2 years) of wage-earning, patient-side clinical experience, with the most recent work within the last three years and beyond the training period.  

Option 2: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA Pathway) 

  • Possess a valid credential from one of the following: 
  • American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) 
  • National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP) 
  • National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) 
  • National Health career Association (NHA) 
  • American Medical Technologists (AMT) 
  • Have 4,000 clock hours of experience in a medical office or outpatient clinical setting, including clinical procedures and administrative responsibilities (e.g., billing, insurance, transcription). 

Additional Requirements: 

  • Must pass a WV State Police criminal background check. 
  • Must complete all training and credentialing required by the WV Department of Education, including: 
  • A Basic Skills Assessment 
  • NOCTI Content Exams (written and performance) 
  • Completion of a WV Technical Institute-approved certification program (22 hours, including a two-week summer session) 
  • Must obtain and maintain a West Virginia Professional Teaching Certificate in the appropriate CTE area.
