Role purpose • As part of a growing Product Safety team in China, to provide specialist technical expertise and advice related to Environmental Safety (ES) to projects and to the wider business on product related issues. This will require working with the Syngenta China regulatory, biology and commercial teams to understand detailed project requirements. Interactions with the global Product Safety organisation in other regions is also required as is the need to interact with regulatory agencies and scientific organisations within China. Accountabilities • As an expert in the field of ecotoxicology, environmental fate, or environmental risk assessment, manage the delivery of environmental safety relevant work to support CP registrations in China. • Provide technical expertise to identify and solve key scientific problems, with a focus on how to provide data and risk assessment in ways acceptable to ICAMA. • Represents Syngenta in key discussions with external regulatory agencies e.g. ICAMA and other stakeholders to negotiate issues on the acceptability of results and procedures for active ingredients and products under review. • By understanding the current and evolving Chinese regulatory guidelines for ecotoxicology, environmental fate or risk assessment to provide advice to project teams, highlighting project risks and potential solutions. • Work with other ES technical experts on the design of new or unfamiliar studies and assessments in China; may have lead responsibility for complex studies or programmes of work. • Plays a proactive role in the management of key technical issues and assisting in the definition of future technical strategy for Product Safety in China including input into the development of positions on regulatory risk assessment methodology in China. • Help ES Science Delivery Lead to develop strategies to manage existing and upcoming ES related regulatory issues by understanding the changing regulatory environments in China, and take the lead to manage such issues together with industry partners. • To work with Syngenta environmental safety experts globally to ensure the requirements for China are understood and to facilitate the use of wider company expertise in China.

Critical knowledge • Qualified to at least degree level in a scientific subject. • Technically trained in ecotoxicology, environmental fate or environmental risk assessment through a combination of education and work experience. • An understanding of the current and evolving Chinese regulatory requirements for environmental safety and risk assessments. Critical experience • Experience of advocating technically robust positions internally and with regulatory authorities. • Experience of technical project/programme leadership. • Experience in conducting and interpreting environmental studies and analysing and utilizing complex data in risk assessments to support product registrations. • Experience in making and justifying interpretations of complex databases for pesticides and across groups of related chemicals.
