Global Emergency Medicine Fellowship Director

Position Overview:

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center is seeking a highly skilled, adaptable, and experienced Emergency Medicine Physician to join our faculty as the Global Emergency Medicine Fellowship Director. This role combines clinical excellence with a commitment to global health, education, leadership, and academic productivity. The ideal candidate will have a passion for advancing emergency care worldwide, global EM fellowship training or equivalent experience, and a proven track record in both clinical practice and academic leadership.

Vanderbilt’s Global Emergency Medicine Division has a long-standing successful academic partnership with Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation in Georgetown, Guyana, primarily focusing on EM systems development, EM residency education, pre-hospital systems development and bedside ultrasound training. In addition, the division is anticipating a new partnership in Maputo, Mozambique.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Fellowship Leadership:
    • Oversee and direct the Global Emergency Medicine Fellowship program, ensuring it aligns with the highest standards of medical education and global health practices.
    • Mentor and support fellows in their academic and professional growth, providing guidance on research projects, global health quality improvement initiatives, and clinical skills.
    • Ensure compliance with accreditation requirements and maintain the program's standing as a leader in global emergency medicine.
    • Attend VUMC GME monthly program director’s meetings
    • Attend and actively participate in SAEM’s Global EM Fellowship Consortium monthly meetings
  • Clinical Practice:
    • Provide high-quality emergency care in a busy and dynamic emergency department, contributing to the clinical teaching of residents and medical students.
    • Serve as a clinical leader, modeling best practices in patient care, teamwork, and emergency medicine protocols.
  • Global Health Initiatives:
    • Expand our established academic partnership with Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation in Georgetown, Guyana.
    • Assist in developing the anticipated partnership in Maputo, Mozambique, focusing on similar goals of capacity building, EM residency education and emergency care system strengthening.
    • Lead or participate in global health endeavors, focusing on capacity building, emergency care system strengthening, education and health equity.
    • Expand partnerships and collaboration within Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health.
  • Research and Scholarship:
    • Promote and contribute to research in global emergency medicine, including securing grant funding, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting at national and international conferences.
    • Encourage and support fellows in their research endeavors, fostering a culture of inquiry and evidence-based practice.
  • Educational Outreach:
    • Design and implement educational programs and workshops for healthcare professionals globally, aimed at improving emergency care in resource-limited settings.
    • Participate in public speaking engagements, webinars, and other forums to advocate for global health initiatives and emergency medicine education.

 

Department Overview: 

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is seeking candidates for faculty positions.  We are seeking to identify faculty who will help us realize our vision of becoming a premier patient centered academic medical center, support our mission to discover and teach how to treat each patient with dignity and respect – anyone, anything, anytime – and actively contribute to developing and training the next generation of academic leaders. The Department of Emergency Medicine

VUMC’s Department of Emergency Medicine is a national leader in clinical care, education and research. The Department has over 90 faculty, and we have 6 divisions: operations, emergency medical services, global emergency medicine, emergency medicine research, simulation and ultrasound.

Located in Nashville, TN, VUMC is the only adult and pediatric Level I trauma center in Middle Tennessee. VUMC’s combined emergency departments treat over 200,000 patients annually. Department of Emergency Medicine physicians currently provide emergency services at Vanderbilt University Hospital, Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital, Vanderbilt Tullahoma-Harton Hospital, Vanderbilt Bedford Hospital, and the Emergency Department of the Nashville Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Emergency Medicine’s Research Division is one of the most productive and impactful emergency care research groups in the world, with numerous grants and contracts from federal agencies and major industry partners. The Research Division has generated practicing changing data in many fields, including acute heart failure management, resuscitation strategies, airway management, geriatric emergency care, COVID-19 therapies, and ED operations. Faculty and researchers in the department produce more than 100 peer-reviewed publications annually, are currently #13 in NIH funding nationally, and are well regarded by their peers nationally and globally.

Education is a top priority for the department. There are currently 39 residents in this highly regarded and sought-after program. Much of the residency program’s stellar reputation rests on the efforts of faculty members and upper-level residents who view excellent teaching as a core component of their responsibilities. The third/fourth-year medical student rotation is the highest rated required clinical rotation in the medical school.  The Department also has an ACGME accredited fellowship in EMS, a EUFAC accredited fellowship in Ultrasound, and GME approved fellowships in Global Emergency Medicine and Simulation.  Through collaborative relationships with other Departments and Divisions at VUMC, we also train fellows in Critical Care Medicine, Clinical Informatics, Sports Medicine, Palliative Medicine, Addiction Medicine, and Pediatric EM.

In 2008, the Medical Center moved 23 clinics into the renovated 100 Oaks Mall in the Berry Hill section of Nashville, filling 440,000 square feet of space nine miles from the main campus, and beginning a major diversification of its geographic footprint that now includes more than 160 clinical care locations located throughout Middle Tennessee. VUMC’s four major hospitals are located on the historic Vanderbilt University campus, greatly increasing opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and scientific discovery.

Currently, VUMC has six operational divisions including five Clinical Enterprise Divisions: Vanderbilt University Hospital, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital, Vanderbilt Health Services, the Clinical Professional Practice and one Academic Enterprise Division.

The clinical professional practice for VUMC’s faculty physicians is organized for medical staff leadership and credentialing as the Vanderbilt Medical Group (VMG). VUMC’s clinical professional practice and academic department administration is structured through clinical departments led by clinical department chairs and supported by their associated Business Officers who bear primary responsibility for business management of these departments.

VUMC also leads a statewide clinical network, the Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network (VHAN), which is among the largest provider-managed affiliated networks in the US. Established in 2012, VHAN has developed a large network of participating providers, including 13 health systems (70 hospitals in the aggregate) and more than 6,400 providers across Tennessee. The over 300,000 plus lives under management are currently a combination of the employees of the hospital members and other lives contributed by employers. VUMC also has an array of distinguished research activities that place it among the nation’s top institutions receiving funding from the National Institutes of Health. Its research infrastructure is built upon a philosophy of collaboration and entrepreneurialism that has facilitated the success of interdisciplinary programs, including a major NIH award to support the Precision Medicine Initiative Data and Research Center, and the recent renewal of a large Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA).   • Education: MD or DO with board certification in Emergency Medicine. Fellowship training in Global Emergency Medicine or equivalent experience is highly preferred.
