Position Summary
The University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine ( UIWSOM ) educates aspiring physicians to be justice-minded, global citizens using a community-based, distributed model of education, which fosters inclusion, discovery and innovation. The UIWSOM Office of Graduate Medical Education and the Texas Institute for Graduate Medical Education and Research ( TIGMER ) has partnered with CommuniCare Health Centers and Baptist Health System in the development of a family medicine residency which is now in its second year of operation. The UIWSOM invites applications for a Board-Certified family physician to become a core clinical faculty member. This will be a part-time position 0.5 full time equivalent ( FTE ) for teaching, administration, scholarly activity, and development of the residency program. It is expected that the applicant will be employed by CommuniCare Community Health Center for the remaining 0.5 FTE for clinical practice and to supervise residents at the continuity clinic. Together, both the academic and the clinical component will create a full-time position. The successful applicant must be acceptable to both UIWSOM and CommuniCare in order to be hired. This position will be a 0.5 FTE position with the requirement that the faculty member must also maintain employment with CommuniCare Community Health Center. Continued employment with the UIWSOM is contingent upon continued employment with CommuniCare Community Health. UIWSOM is seeking a family medicine faculty physician to work closely with the Office of Graduate Medical Education and affiliated clinical sites to continue the development of the new residency program. The successful applicant will work with the program director to direct the development of curriculum and rotations and ensure compliance with accrediting bodies. The core faculty provide support for the program director to ensure the quality of the educational experience for the residents. The core faculty are the expert competency evaluators who work closely with the program director and associate program directors, who assist in developing and implementing the evaluation system, and who teach and advise residents. The core faculty report to the program director and the UIWSOM Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education. The core faculty will operate within the UIWSOM framework of lifelong learning through collaborative scholarship, innovative educational excellence and learner-centered curricula.
Essential Functions
Assist with the recruitment, interviewing, selection, matching, and on- boarding of residents for the residency program. Assist the program director with compliance with the requirements for accreditation by the relevant accrediting agencies, including site visits, preparation of PIF’s, etc. Provide didactic sessions for residents each month as assigned by program director. Directly supervise residents in their continuity clinic at CommuniCare Health Centers (under contract with CommuniCare Community Health Centers) Ensure the quality of care provided by residents in the program is of the highest caliber, and that lapses in quality are appropriately investigated, resolved, and used to improve processes and education. Work with the program directors to ensure efficient and effective use of resources including conference space, call space, administrative help, etc. Participate in the Residency Advisory Committee, the Clinical Competency Committee, and the Program Evaluation Committee. Advise residents with respect to their career and educational goals. Spend significant time in the evaluation of residents including direct observation of residents with patients. Undergo training in the evaluation and assessment of the ACGME competencies. Assist with the supervision of UIWSOM medical students assigned to CommuniCare Participate in academic societies and in educational programs designed to enhance educational and administrative skills. Preferred Qualifications
Experience on faculty of residency program. Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish.
