Description

Job Title: Community Health Educator

Classification: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Reports to: Director of Community Health Outreach

Salary: 37,000 Annually


Summary: Community Health Educator will play a pivotal role in promoting and implementing evidence-based opioid abatement strategies focused on reducing overdose deaths and other harms through public education and outreach. Temporary position grant funded through September 2026. 


Responsibilities:

  • Engage in strategic distribution of naloxone and foster partnerships to enhance the well-being of communities impacted by substance use. 
  • Assist in the coordination of referrals and handoffs to appropriate mental health services, primary medical care, sexual health prevention activities, and other internal and external supportive services. 
  • Complete all required documentation; maintain appropriate information in client files.
  • Educate community on services and program availability.
  • Develop and facilitate training on overdose prevention and naloxone administration. 
  • Coordinate and participate in street outreach activities to connect with individuals in need.
  • Delivering public education on substance use prevention and recovery.
  • Assist in the development and dissemination of media campaigns to prevent opioid misuse. 


Requirements

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent. Bachelor's degree preferred. 
  • Position requires the employee be insurable, current driver’s license, access to reliable transportation. 
  • Two to three years’ experience in a substance abuse treatment or community-based setting is preferred.
  • Bilingual (English & Spanish) preferred.


Experience/Skills/Knowledge:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of populations in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of community agencies and resources.
  • Skill in use of personal computers and related software applications, including e-mail.
  • Good communication skills, such as listening well, and using language appropriately.
  • Amount of travel required is up to 75% of time.
  • Skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds are required especially those living in rural and underserved areas. 


Physical Requirements:

  • Available to work flexible schedule which may include some nights and/or weekends. 
  • Work will be performed primarily in offices, public buildings, schools, churches, medical facilities, family homes and automobiles that will vary considerably with regard to the extent of heating, cooling, or physical comforts/protections.
  • Position could require long hours of standing or sitting at a computer workstation.
  • Must be able to lift at least 25lbs and be able to set up tables, chairs, and pop canopies for events in addition to moving equipment needed for specific job assignments.
  • May encounter architectural barriers (including stairs), animals not on a leash unsanitary living conditions, extreme heat, or cold and contagious disease.
