POSITION

OVERVIEW

TITLE: Bio-Medical Sciences Technology Teacher

STATUS/FLSA: Full-time / Non-Exempt

PAY SCHEDULE/GROUP: Teacher Salary Schedule

SUPERVISOR: Executive Director of AIT

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 190 Days. Salary determined by schedule set by the Board.

EVALUATION: Evaluated annually by the Executive Director.

 

GENERAL

DESCRIPTION

 

A Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Biomedical Science Instructor is responsible for implementing a hands-on, project-based curriculum that prepares high school students for careers in healthcare, medicine, and clinical research. These instructors facilitate coursework covering topics such as human medicine, microbiology, genetics, and epidemiology, often acting as facilitators rather than traditional lecturers.

 

EDUCATION

 

Bachelor of Science/Biology and/or Masters Degree

Certified in field or eligible for SC Teaching Certification

 

EXPERIENCE

3 years experience preferred; Previous experience in a STEM field,  healthcare, or previous high school teaching is highly preferred. AP Biology Teaching Experience is a plus.

 

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS

REQUIRED: Must hold a valid South Carolina teaching certificate in a relevant area (typically Science or Biology): GT Endorsement

 

PREFERRED: Project Lead the Way (If the candidate has not been certified to teach the PLTW curriculum, arrangements will be made for the training.), AP Biology

 

ESSENTIAL

DUTIES

 

 

Essential job duties are intended to be examples of duties and are not intended to be all inclusive. There will be other duties assigned.

  • Curriculum Implementation: Deliver the official PLTW Biomedical Science curriculum, which includes courses such as Principles of Biomedical Science, Human Body Systems,  Medical Interventions.and Biomedical Innovation (Capstone).
  • Hands-on Instruction: Guide students through laboratory experiments, using specialized equipment such as micropipettes, thermal cyclers, and electrophoresis equipment.
  • Project-Based Learning: Facilitate real-world scenarios, such as investigating crime scenes, diagnosing patients in a virtual clinic, and tracking outbreaks.
  • Assessment and Evaluation: Assess student performance through project work, laboratory documentation, and the National PLTW End-of-Course Assessment, which can allow students to earn college credit.
  • Classroom Management: Establish a safe and orderly lab environment, ensuring proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and handling of biological materials.
  • Professional Collaboration: Collaborate with school counselors, administrators, and industry partners to develop professional skills in students
  • Teaches concepts and skills in Bio-Medical Sciences to include various aspects of the Human Body Systems and Human Body Functions, and the Principles of Medical Scientific Research. Students will be required to develop a Capstone Project.
  • Strives to implement by instruction and action the institute’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media and conducts subject area research to support and enhance course content.
  • Prepares lesson plans for daily classroom activities; organizes classroom, and laboratory area for daily instruction.
  • Provides limited lectures, demonstrates and uses teaching technology aids to present subject matter to class.
  •  Selects and requests instructional aids and supplies; maintains inventory of supplies and materials needed for classroom activities.
  • Prepares, administers, and corrects tests and assignments; records grades and/or other assessments. Maintains order in the classroom; supervises student activities. Maintains attendance and grade records as required by the school Board.
  • Counsels students in adjustment and academic problems; provides feedback to students.
  • Meets with parents and school counselors as needed to discuss student performance, activities, etc.; issues reports to inform parents of students' progress.
  •  Instructs students in the proper use, care and operation of biomedical lab.Evaluates progress of students in concepts and skills and contribution to group projects.
  • Operates general office equipment such as a computer, telephone, copier, etc.
  • Interacts with students, parents, district staff and personnel, government agencies, etc.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the school which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge in the methods for developing lesson plans and materials, and classroom activities which stimulate learning.Knowledge of the records, forms and reports which must be prepared and maintained. Knowledge of proper maintenance of equipment, materials and supplies used in daily activities. Knowledge of training methods used and actual practice used in classrooms with students. Knowledge of counseling methods necessary for handling student academic and adjustment problems. Knowledge of the materials and information which must be prepared for classroom instructional activities.Ability to provide Instruction to students through explanation, demonstration and/or supervised practice.

Use computers for data entry; or handle, use, or repair hand-held power equipment or light machinery; Use computers for word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations or custom applications.
