Be at the forefront of change and become a part of the innovative and forward-thinking academic team in the University of Michigan-Flint’s Master of Science Physician Assistant Program in the rapidly expanding College of Health Sciences! The Physician Assistant Department is seeking applications for a 12-month faculty position as an Assistant Director of Clinical Education, tenure professor or clinical-track assistant professor.  This position is 80% instructional and 20% administrative.  The track and rank will be commensurate with experience and academic credentials. This hybrid position requires a regular presence on campus. This position reports to the PA Program Director.

Currently, faculty in the College of Health Sciences are required to report to campus minimally two days a week. This is subject to change based on program, department, college or university needs.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Assistant Director of Clinical Education Duties (20%)

Provide effective leadership of clinical education within the MSPA Program which includes:

  • Assist with the planning, coordinating, facilitating, administering, monitoring and assessing clinical education activities
  • Communicates clearly and promptly with the Associate Director of Clinical Education and the Program Director about matters pertaining to the clinical year
  • Communicates clinical year matters to and works collaboratively with the Clinical Team, faculty, staff, students and clinical preceptors
  • Assists with clinical site sufficiency and effectiveness through development, maintenance, and assessment of clinical rotation sites 
  • Oversees clinical affiliation documentation and site requirements. 
  • Supervises maintenance of student compliance and clinical preceptor licensing and certification information
  • Supervises organization of and participates in EOR Callback days with clinical coordinators
  • Conducts site visits on assigned students and performs periodic clinical site audit visits 
  • Supervises updating/maintaining clinical site database in program software with clinical coordinator support
  • Responsible for finalizing clinical year student handbook and preceptor handbook with clinical faculty support 
  • Assists the Associate Director of Clinical Education to ensure clinical phase curriculum meets practice standards and scope, and complies with ARC-PA requirements 
  • Ensure that the SCPE site list is accurate and up to date
  • Maps topics, clinical phase learning outcomes, assessments, and competencies and program goals to ARC-PA standards
  • Creates clinical phase ARC-PA reports for maintenance of accreditation
  • Participates in the preparation of ARC-PA accreditation materials
  • Participate in ARC-PA accreditation process and accreditation site visits
  • Collaborates with Associate Director of Didactic Education to evaluate and fill gaps in program curriculum
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the PA Department Director and the Associate Director of Clinical Education 

Principal Faculty Duties (80%): 

Teaching

Includes teaching the program’s clinical education courses and possibly other courses as assigned based on departmental needs.

  • Provide course instruction according to expertise and needs of the PA program
  • Assist with clinical curriculum development, teaching and assessment by reviewing and refining SCPE and 63x course series syllabi and assessments
  • Serve as course coordinator and instructor in didactic courses as needed
  • Develops PPA 650 course for students as needed (syllabi, lectures, learning experiences and evaluation instruments and coordinates schedule)
  • Provide instruction, assessment and remediation of students in courses while working closely and collaboratively with other faculty

Scholarship

Engages in scholarship according to the College of Health Sciences scholarship requirements for Clinical or Tenure-track Faculty.

  • Participate in professional development activities and maintains personal scholarship
  • Conduct scholarly research and project work as required for clinical or tenure track faculty within the College of Health Sciences

Service

All CHS faculty members are expected to provide service to the University, college, department, profession and the community. Consistent with the mission of CHS and the University, professional service contributions to the Flint and regional community are valued as well as national and international contributions. Engagement in service activities at multiple levels is required. The quality and impact of service contributions is more important than the number of different service activities. Perform other functions in support of the program as requested by the program director.

  • Participate in recruitment, admission, retention, and academic progress of students
  • Serve as academic advisor to students
  • Assist with ongoing program self-evaluation, policy and curriculum review
  • Participate in activities of state and national organizations concerned with the profession
  • Serve on program, department, college, and university committees as requested
  • Participate in service activities to support the Department, University, community and profession
  • If clinical track faculty, engage in clinical work to enhance teaching, scholarship and service


Required Qualifications

  • Clinical-Track Assistant Professor position: 
    • If a Bachelors in Physician Assistant, then a Master's or doctoral degree in a relevant discipline is applicable
  • Clinical Track Associate Professor position:
    • Bachelor's or Master's in Physician Assistant and a Ph.D. or related academic doctoral degree in a relevant discipline is required.
    • a minimum of six years of PA teaching experience and six years of PA clinical experience
  • Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position:
    • Bachelor's or Master's in Physician Assistant, and a Ph.D. or related academic doctoral degree in a relevant discipline
    • At least three years of professional experience as a PA, involving direct patient care
  • Current NCCPA certification
  • Current/or eligible for PA licensure in the state of Michigan
  • Prior experience in PA education
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

  • Eligible for consideration at senior faculty status
  • Demonstrated scholarly productivity  

Eligibility for a tenure-track associate or clinical-track associate position is assessed upon hire according to the CHS Tenure and Promotion Standards. 

Tenure is contingent upon the University of Michigan Board of Regents approval.
