Position Summary

The Prior Authorization Specialist is responsible for obtaining and processing insurance authorizations for medical procedures, medications, and services. This role ensures timely approvals, accurate documentation, and compliance with insurance guidelines to prevent delays in patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Submit prior authorization requests to insurance companies via phone, fax, or online portals
  • Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits
  • Review medical documentation to ensure completeness and accuracy
  • Follow up with insurance carriers regarding pending authorizations
  • Communicate authorization status updates to providers, clinical staff, and patients
  • Appeal denied authorization requests when appropriate
  • Maintain accurate records in EMR/EHR systems
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA and insurance regulations
  • Work closely with billing and coding departments to prevent claim denials

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 1+ year experience in medical billing, prior authorizations, or healthcare administration preferred
  • Knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes
  • Familiarity with insurance guidelines, including Medicare and Medicaid
  • Strong computer skills and experience with EMR/EHR systems
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced medical office environment
