Pharmacy Clinical Program Manager
The Pharmacy Clinical Program Manager provides strategic and operational leadership for clinical pharmacy programs across the health system, including inpatient hospital, ambulatory care, long-term care, oncology, andΒ retail/specialtyΒ pharmacy settings. This role is responsible for advancing pharmacy practice, improving medication safety, and optimizing therapeutic outcomes through evidence-based initiatives. The manager leads interdisciplinary collaboration, ensures regulatory compliance, and drives continuous improvement aligned with institutional goals.
Key Responsibilities
Systemwide Clinical Program Leadership
- Direct and coordinate clinical pharmacy services across diverse care environments, ensuring consistency in standards, protocols, and outcomes.
- Lead strategic planning and execution of clinical initiatives that support safe, effective, and cost-efficient medication use.
- Collaborate with site-specific pharmacy leaders to tailor programs to meet the unique needs of each care setting.
Leadership & Management Skills
- Strategic Thinking: Align clinical pharmacy programs with organizational goals, national benchmarks, and emerging healthcare trends.
- Influence & Collaboration: Build strong relationships with interdisciplinary teams, including physicians, nurses, and administrators, to drive clinical excellence.
- Change Management: Lead the adoption of new clinical practices, technologies, and workflows across multiple settings.
- Team Development: Mentor and develop pharmacy staff, fostering a high-performance culture focused on continuous learning and improvement.
- Decision-Making: Use data-driven insights to guide clinical decisions, resource allocation, and program prioritization.
- Communication: Effectively communicate clinical strategies, performance metrics, and improvement plans to stakeholders at all levels.
- Project Management: Oversee complex clinical initiatives from planning through execution, ensuring timely delivery and measurable impact.
Clinical Practice Advancement
- Develop and implement evidence-based treatment pathways, protocols, and therapeutic initiatives.
- Provide expert consultation to pharmacy teams and interdisciplinary providers across all care settings.
- Promote safe, effective, and cost-conscious medication therapy through clinical decision support and formulary management.
Education & Competency Development
- Oversee training and competency development for pharmacists in all practice areas.
- Mentor pharmacists, residents, and students in clinical practice, research, and professional growth.
- Support continuing education and foster a culture of lifelong learning and innovation.
Quality Improvement & Performance Monitoring
- Lead systemwide initiatives to improve medication safety, reduce adverse drug events, and enhance therapeutic outcomes.
- Monitor performance metrics and use data-driven strategies to evaluate program effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.
Antimicrobial Stewardship Oversight
- Maintain oversight of the antimicrobial stewardship program across all applicable care settings.
- Ensure program compliance with regulatory requirements and coordinate updates with facilities and governing bodies.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
- Serve as a clinical liaison between pharmacy and other departments (e.g., nursing, medical staff, case management) to improve medication-related processes and outcomes.
- Participate in systemwide committees and initiatives focused on clinical excellence, patient safety, and operational efficiency.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelorβs Degree or higher in Pharmacy (Required)
Licensure & Certification
- Licensed Pharmacist in Virginia (VDHP) within 60 days of hire (Required)
- Board Certification through the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (any) within 1 year of hire (Required)
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 6 years of progressive clinical pharmacy experience in a health system setting, with demonstrated impact on patient care, medication safety, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Leadership experience overseeing clinical pharmacy programs across multiple care environments, including inpatient hospital, ambulatory care, long-term care, oncology, and retail pharmacy.
- Experience leading interdisciplinary teams and driving systemwide clinical initiatives that align with institutional goals and regulatory standards.
- Proven track record in developing and implementing evidence-based protocols, treatment pathways, and medication management strategies that improve therapeutic outcomes and reduce adverse drug events.
- Demonstrated success in mentoring and training pharmacists, residents, and students, fostering clinical competency and professional development.
- Experience managing performance metrics and using data-driven approaches to evaluate program effectiveness and guide continuous improvement.
- Completion of a PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency (Required); PGY-2 Residency in a clinical specialty or health-system pharmacy administration (Preferred).
