Position Summary
 

At Stony Brook Medicine, our Social Workers are valuable members of our team, who provide empathic care to our patients, their families and visitors, with the highest degree of integrity and respect. Social Workers apply the principles and practices of their profession to provide integrated social casework, including direct counseling, therapy, advocacy, and other services to individuals, families and groups in a variety of settings. Social Workers plan, implement, coordinate, document treatment for and plan  discharge for  individuals diagnosed with\: medical and/or mental illness, behavioral health issues, developmental and intellectual disabilities; work-related illnesses or injuries; chemical addiction; victims of neglect, maltreatment or abuse, chronic illness, sudden severe illness, patients receiving palliative care or needing hospice. Social Workers at Stony Brook Medicine approach treatment in conjunction with Case Management to provide comprehensive care.  Social Workers working with high risk psychosocial cases with a patient and family centered model and focusing on issues not limited to\:  Adjustment to illness, homelessness, and substance use disorder, lack of resources, family assessment, barriers to care and social determinants of health. 

 

 

Qualified candidates in the role of supervisor will demonstrate excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, knowledge and understanding of patient care and effectively respond to changing patient needs by making decisions based on ethical principles and adhering to our high standard of excellence. Qualified candidates will take on a leadership role and fully understand the role of Social Work in a Medical/Surgical/Behavioral health setting.  The supervisor will have a working knowledge or integrated health care and the importance of strong clinical supervision in a large teaching hospital setting. The supervisor will be able to initiate and run projects, create and do presentations, and educate the staff.  The supervisor will have experience with staff supervision.  

 

Duties of a Social Worker/Supervisor may include the following but are not limited to:

 

  • Supervision of  25-35 direct reports
  • Supervision of students and in task supervision of indirect reports
  • Attendance and membership in applicable hospital committees.
  • Presentation and education to staff on current and relevant topics
  • Organization and leadership of meetings as needed
  • Active engagement in Department Process Improvement and Quality Assurance measures
  • Ongoing chart reviews
  • Staff counseling and mentoring
  • Staff education
  • Ongoing management of complex cases presentation at hospital level and department level employee orientation
  • Unit coverage as needed
  • On-call re-call back up supervisor
  • Coverage for Director of Social Work
  • Direct report to the Director of Social Work

 

Qualifications

 

Required\:  Masters in Social Work from an accredited institution. New York State licensure as well as Five plus years’ experience in a Medical Setting.  Minimum three years of supervisory experience or staff clinical oversight and/or task supervisor experience.   

 

Preferred: Experience in Medical and Behavioral Health settings. Experience with multiple patient populations.  Experience in In-patient setting.

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s). 

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer. 

*The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position is $105,000 - $133,000 Base 

The above salary range represents SBUH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.  The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate’s validated years of comparable experience.  Any efforts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification from the application process or termination of employment if hired.

Some positions offer annual supplemental pay such as:

  • Location pay for UUP, CSEA & PEF full-time positions ($4000)

     

  • Inconvenience pay/supplemental shift differential. ($575)
