The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of multiple divisions - the San Francisco Health Network, Population Health, Behavioral Health Services, and Administration. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers. The Population Health Division (PHD) provides core public health services for the City and County of San Francisco: health protection, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response. Behavioral Health Services operates in conjunction with SFHN and provides a range of mental health and substance use treatment services. 

Job Description

Under general supervision, the Medical Social Work Supervisor oversees recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of social work staff, assigns caseloads, and provides clinical consultation and supervision on complex cases. Additionally, they coordinate medical social services programs, perform therapy, handle administrative duties, and participate in hospital and community activities. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 

  • Supervises assigned personnel which may include class 2922 Senior Medical Social Workers and class 2920 Medical Social Workers and other ancillary staff;  
  • Provides consultation concerning the most difficult/complex cases; manages complex cases as needed; 
  • Prepares work schedule and assignments for medical social work staff; confers with individual staff members on specific duties;  
  • Reviews important and difficult cases to check eligibility; reviews other cases for specific reasons; 
  • Makes administrative decisions and provides clinical consultation and supervision to Medical Social Workers; 
  • Coordinates Medical Social Services Program; acts as liaison between medical social service staff and various hospital departments, personnel and community agencies; 
  • As part of an interdisciplinary team, participates in the preparation and maintenance of individual case records;  
  • Prepares or supervises the preparation of periodic performance reports and related statistics; 
  • Interprets medical policies and procedures to Social Workers and medical vendors; 
  • Performs as the departmental representative and takes a leadership role at conferences, workshops, seminars, regional committees and related meetings; 
  • Participates in quality improvement efforts; 
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned. 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. EXPERIENCE: Four (4) years of post-Master's Medical Social Worker experience in a health care setting, AND
  2. LICENSE: Current licensure as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) issued by the State of California Board of Behavioral Sciences as required under Title 22, California Administrative Code, Section 70055.

Substitution:

Two (2) years of post-Master's Medical Social Worker experience supervising medical social workers in a medical social service program of a health care setting (such as a licensed hospital, licensed home health agency or licensed healthcare community and ambulatory center) meeting the regulatory requirements of the State of California may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the post-Master's Medical Social Worker experience as described above.

One-year fulltime employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week).

Candidates must complete the questionnaire in order to continue in the selection process and will be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score.

Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.

Certification
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of Ten Scores.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 6 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
