Job Purpose (Primary)
Assist the Nursing Program Director and other faculty members in the assessment, planning, implementation and
evaluation of the curriculum; to develop strategies to teach the curriculum; and to assist in the implementation of the
course through teaching, supervising, and provision of academic advisement of students.
Qualifications are congruent with the qualifications of nursing faculty as required by Title 19, Series 1-11.1 of the West
Virginia Legislative Rule. The Instructor must meet the following requirements:
● Have a graduate degree with a major in nursing; or
● Have a bachelor’s degree with a major in nursing and:
o Be enrolled in a graduate program within one year of employment as a faculty member; or
o 10 years of direct care patient experience in nursing for full-time faculty, or 2 years of direct care
patient experience in nursing for part-time faculty.
● Three (3) years of occupational experience
● Holds a current, active RN license or privilege to practice that is not encumbered and meets the
requirements of the Board of Nursing.
● Have evidence of current experience in nursing practice and education sufficient to demonstrate
professional competence; or for faculty with less than two years’ experience in education, the nursing
program administrator will submit to the Board a mentoring and orientation plan as defined by Board
guidelines and function under the guidance of a faculty member fully qualified in the specific teaching area
and professional competence.
● Interprofesional faculty teaching non-clinical nursing courses shall have advanced preparation appropriate
for the content being taught.
Responsibilities:
● General:
o Remain familiar with institutional policies and procedures as outlined in the College Catalog, and the
Faculty Handbook and follow such policies and procedures.
o Develop, implement, evaluate and update the purpose, philosophy, outcomes and organizational
framework of the Nursing Education Program
o Assist in the development, evaluation, and revision of student admission, progression, retention and
graduation policies within the policies of the College.
o Promote positive and productive relationships with service area hospitals, clinics, businesses,
industries, and agencies.
o Be prompt and punctual in reporting for work, in meeting classes, and in keeping office hours.
o Serve on Nursing Staff committees as assigned
o Prepare or assist in the preparation of materials such as those used in academic administration when
requested, including course syllabi, program outlines, articulation, and catalog materials.
o Promote student development through enrichment and mentoring experiences.
o Perform any other professional duties as assigned by the Nursing Program Director
o Assist the students to develop an understanding of values, attitudes, and ideals appropriate to the
health care profession.
● Didactic Instruction
o Follow the syllabus as approved by the Curriculum Committee.
o Teach all courses as assigned.
o Design and implement teaching strategies that will assist a nursing student to meet the course
outcomes.
o Evaluate each assigned nursing student’s achievement, progress and outcomes.
o Assist in the design, implementation, and evaluation of the curriculum using a written plan.
o Provide academic advising and guidance of students.
o Plan and provide theoretical instruction and clinical or laboratory experiences that reflect an
understanding of the philosophy, objectives and curriculum of the Nursing Education Program.
o Provide competent instruction in the clinical and theoretical areas of nursing as needed.
o Maintain high standards and promote excellence in education.
o Collect, record, maintain, and submit accurate class records including grades, absences, withdrawal
and/or class drop information to Nursing Program Director.
o Maintain attendance records for classes taught.
o Evaluate the progress of students in all classes according to institutional, divisional, departmental,
and individual criteria.
● Clinical/Lab Instruction
o Direct, Manage, and Evaluate Student learning in the clinical/lab setting.
o Assists the student in integration of theory and practice, specific to the course’s learning activities
and level of the learner.
o Evaluates the student’s development of clinical reasoning skills.
o Remain available at all times the student is in the clinical/lab setting.
o Directly observe and guide students’ learning activities with the clients and in simulated
environments.
o Evaluate students in clinical/lab related to the Student Learning Outcomes.
o Provide timely and ongoing feedback to the faculty (or to Clinical Coordinator) regarding the clinical
and lab site’s effectiveness in supporting the student accomplishment of the course and program
outcomes.
o Collaborate with the unit manager and staff so that the presence of students and their activities are
supportive of the unit’s goals and needs.
o Demonstrate proper respect for students, faculty, and staff and conduct the class in a student-
friendly manner.
o Orient students to the clinical/lab area, and demonstrate proper procedures.
o Work with the Clinical Coordinator and the Nursing Program Director to ensure clinical/lab facilities
have course learning objectives and student schedules for each course.
While Nursing Faculty are responsible for fulfilling all primary responsibilities listed above to achieve the immediate goals of the campus, he/she is responsible to meet all organization goals. As such adjustments or additions to these
responsibilities and the methods by which they are achieved may be required by management to ensure operational
effectiveness and efficiency across departments, campuses and the organization as a whole.
