Des Moines Valley Health and Human Services (DVHHS) currently has a full time opening for a Community Health Educator. Primary job duties include supporting community health and prevention efforts through planning, coordination, and data-informed program development. This position assists with implementing and evaluating strategies related to substance use prevention, community preparedness, and public health sustainability.  Additionally, the role supports the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program intakes and referrals, providing nutrition education and counseling, and developing materials that support healthy behaviors. The Community Health Educator works to improve overall community well-being through evidence-based approaches and strong partnerships across public health and community sectors.

Minimum qualifications of education and experience for this position: This position requires a bachelor’s degree in nutrition (such as Nutritional Sciences, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, or Dietetics), Health, Home Economics, Nursing, or a closely related field, and two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required coursework includes at least 10 semester (15 quarter) credits in Food and Nutrition—covering general human nutrition and nutrition for infants, children, and women during prenatal, postpartum, and breastfeeding stages—along with 3 semester (4 quarter) credits in counseling or adult education and 3 semester (4 quarter) credits in chemistry or biological sciences.

Preferred qualifications include being a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and Licensed Dietitian (LD or LN) in the State of Minnesota, or a Registered Nurse (RN) licensed by the Minnesota Board of Nursing, with preference given to nurses holding a bachelor’s degree or higher.

This position is classified in Grade 10 of the DVHHS Compensation Plan with an anticipated 2026 pay range of $29.71 - $38.77 per hour.

This is a full-time position working 32 hours per week with a full benefit package which includes Public Employee Retirement pension. 

In order to ensure the safety of citizens, employees and property, DVHHS has adopted a drug and alcohol testing policy which applies to all candidates being considered for employment with DVHHS. A Drug and Alcohol test must be completed within 24 hours of all contingent verbal offers of employment, unless alternate scheduling arrangements are approved by Human Resources office.
