UniServices is the University of Auckland’s research commercialisation and growth team. We sit at the intersection of research, innovation, and industry, with a mission to grow and commercialise the University’s vast footprint of research expertise.

Job Description

Turn World-Class Science into Commercial Success

  • Bridge the gap between high-end research and industry application.
  • Drive the commercial strategy for Genomics, Imaging, and Cytometry platforms.
  • Ideal for a Commercial Manager, Business Development Lead, or Tech Transfer Specialist.

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

The Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences (FMHS) at the University of Auckland houses some of the most advanced research technology in Aotearoa, from high-throughput genomics to advanced biomedical imaging.

We are looking for a Commercial Manager to turn these world-class research platforms into sustainable, industry-facing assets.

In this pivotal role, you won’t just be "supporting research", you will be building a business model around it. You will act as the interface between our technical experts and the commercial market (Biotech, Pharma, and MedTech), ensuring our facilities are commercially viable, professionally priced, and actively utilised by industry partners.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Commercial Strategy: Reviewing and redesigning business models to move platforms from cost-centres to sustainable revenue generators.
  • Business Development: Proactively hunting for external partners who need access to our infrastructure and expertise.
  • Account Management: Acting as the single point of contact for commercial clients, ensuring a seamless "private sector" service experience.
  • Pricing & Sustainability: Developing robust cost-recovery models and commercial rate cards.

For more information, please see Position Description

The pay range is $146,000-$162,000 pa depending on experience. We also offer 5 weeks annual leave and 6.75% superannuation.

This is a full-time permanent role (37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday).

He kōrero mōu | About you

You’re a commercially minded professional who enjoys working at the intersection of research, people and industry. You’re comfortable engaging with scientists and technical experts, and you know how to turn complex capability into something that makes sense and holds value for external partners.

You don’t need to be a scientist, but you’re genuinely interested in science‑led innovation and research infrastructure. You understand that relationships matter, and you’re at your best when building trust, bringing people together and finding practical ways to make things work for everyone involved.

You may have gained your experience in areas such as business development, scientific services, contract research, technology commercialisation or account management, and are now looking for a role where you can take a more strategic, site‑based approach.

Ideally, you will bring:

  • Strong commercial experience within science, technology or health‑related sectors
  • Confidence working with a wide range of stakeholders, from academic and technical teams to external industry partners
  • A sound understanding of pricing, cost recovery and commercial sustainability
  • The ability to explain technical offerings clearly and compellingly to non‑technical audiences
  • A collaborative, pragmatic approach and the ability to operate effectively in a complex environment
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in science, business or a related field

Experience working with research platforms or scientific services is an advantage, but above all, we’re looking for someone who can connect capability, people and opportunity.

  • A competitive salary with five weeks’ annual leave
