Job Description

Job Summary

Supports and oversees the creation, application, delivery, and management of clinical information and knowledge; participates in the development of workflows, system configuration, change documentation, optimization, and support of staff on application functionality; informs how systems are developed and ensures interoperability to maintain safe medication management.

Specific responsibilities will be documented and retained internally by the Department of Pharmacy.

Primary Responsibilities

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job responsibilities performed.

  • Responsible for build and ongoing maintenance of the inpatient pharmacy application of the EHR including evidence-based Clinical Decision Support tools, Medication Lists, Order Sets, Best Practice Advisories, Reports, and others as developed to improve patient care.
  • Works with staff responsible for automation and purchasing to maintain proper integration between 3rd parties and Epic systems.
  • Build strong relationships with staff from operations, other information systems team members, quality improvement, and others to ensure EHR build is consistent with organizational clinical standards.   
  • Have familiarity with and understanding of operational processes, workflows, and practices in departments to ensure appropriate EHR build   
  • Participates in the planning, development, implementation, upgrading, maintenance, and evaluation of clinical information systems. Activities may include data collection, cataloging information, process analysis, and communication with multidisciplinary team members across all levels of the organization.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience - Required

  • Doctorate of Pharmacy Required (PharmD) unless graduated from U.S. School of Pharmacy in or before 2003 OR Foreign Equivalent 
  • 3 years of previous hospital pharmacy experience
  • Maryland Pharmacist License

Education & Experience - Preferred

  • 2 years of previous experience supporting pharmacy information, applications, and technology in an institutional setting
  • EPIC Willow Certification
  • Board Certified preferred

  •  Practices effective problem identification and resolution skills as a method of sound decision making. Accepts change as a part of the problem-solving process.
  • Demonstrates effective communication methods and skills, using lines of authority appropriately.   
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, workshops, in-service meetings, etc. 
  • Identifies the extent of the health system’s adherence to best practices and guidelines relevant to medication management.  
  • Attends hospital and departmental meetings as required.
  • Utilizes appropriate customer relations skills when interacting with patients, their families, visitors, team members, and others, to ensure all customers are treated with respect and dignity.   
  • Represents the department on hospital committees, professional associates, and community organizations where appropriate. 
  • Participates in the development of policies, procedures, and guidelines pertaining to medication use and management.  
  • Maintains knowledgeability of the daily operations of UMMS, including the Pharmacy Department, through active engagement and awareness of departmental communications via mailbox, bulletin boards, and/or e-mail. 
  • Maintains knowledgeability of the mission, vision, and values of UMMS.
