Overview: The Instructor/faculty shall be responsible to the Director, and Dean of Health Sciences for State Fair Community College.

The adjunct instructor shall be responsible for:

  1. Compliance with industry recognized standards. 
  2. Ongoing planning, systematic development, implementation and evaluation in relationship to the philosophy and outcome criteria of the Health Information Technology/Medical Coding program.
  3. Maintaining educational competencies in area of instructional responsibilities.
  4. Maintaining student records per program and institutional policies. 
  5. Ensuring confidentiality of student records. 
  6. Participate in professional development pertinent to best-practices in education and appropriately apply concepts to class and clinical. 


Adjunct faculty are not required to maintain office hours, but are still expected to be available as needed.

Essential Duties: 

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Required to take instructor online training the semester prior to teaching.        Lead instructor training may be required.
  • The person in this position will be responsible for duties related to teaching as an adjunct faculty member. This may include developing and instruction of the online class.
  • Prepare and deliver academic instruction, including developing syllabi, developing content and administering assessments.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of course content.
  • Assist in assessment process by using approved assessment tools and submitting data.
  • Give feedback to students on assignments, quizzes, exams, projects within one week of the assignment due date.
  • Clearly communicate coursework expectations to students.
  • All faculty/adjuncts are expected to respond to voice messages and emails within 24 hours, but no later than 48 hours, except during school holidays and weekends, or in extenuating circumstances.
  • Respond via email and/or phone throughout the week to answer student questions regarding online content
  • Assist students with accessing appropriate college resources when needed.
  • Establish and maintain a visible presence in your course through intentional efforts to communicate with individual learners and the group as a whole through Announcements, Canvas Conversations, and assignment feedback.
  • Attend Professional Development In-service events.
  • Provide appropriate instructional experiences to meet the objectives of the program.
  • Collaborate with director and other staff as appropriate regarding student absences, remediation, and other student issues. 
  • Counsel students on performance, attendance, professionalism or other concerns as needed.
  • Report student attendance, grades and progress reports by published deadlines. 
  • Maintain the Canvas gradebook. Grades should be current within seven days of the assignment due date.
  • Submit course outcome assessment data for program review.
  • Use appropriate software to report student concerns to increase retention and completion rates.
  • Email communication should occur with students via SFCC email.

Education

  • Associate degree in Health Information Technology or relevant field to Health Information Technology/Medical Coding.
  • Current certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Associate (CCA), or Certified Professional Coder (CPC).

Skills: Have a working knowledge of computers as a medium to manage and improve instruction. Ability to interact with a broad range of people both on and off campus in a positive manner. Show evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills. Possess an understanding of the range of needs community college students represent. Possess a commitment to the philosophy and mission of the community college. Willingness to improve instruction through professional development including pedagogy and technology.  Preference given to those with previous community college experience and those who are in state residents.

Experience:   

  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience working as a medical coder. 
  • Online teaching experience preferred.
